Resilience/Avoidance
Reflecting on the trauma of bushfire: how different species cope.
Avoidance - Beer symbolises the end of the day, switching off, dulling the mind, stopping, retreating. Flower-arranging is inward-looking, domestic, creating a safe, comfortable internal space. Both the masculine and feminine, ways of avoiding and escaping from the bigger external threat.
Resilience - Evolution has given eucalyptus the ability to withstand fire and use it to spur new growth. Epicormic growth sees tiny leaves sprout from charred trunks. Cyclic patterns of regeneration, ensuring the survival of the tree and of the species.
